Using your single transferable vote

For the first time ever, councillors in Scotland will be elected using a system called 'Single Transferable Vote' or STV. This means that, when you vote, instead of marking an X beside the councillor you want to vote for, you should write a number - one for your first preference, two for your second preference, three for your third preference and so on.

Note that council wards are now bigger than before. Three or four councillors will be elected from each ward. This means that you should vote for at least three/four people if you can. However, your vote will still count if you only vote for one. You can, of course, vote for as many people as you like - as long as you remember to write down a number rather than an X.
