Guide to Voting
The 2007 elections are to elect Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) and local councillors.
Our Guide to Voting - X Marks The Spot - provides lots of useful and easy to understand information for disabled voters. Note however that it was produced in 2003, so some of the dates and contact details are out of date. The most important things to note are:
- The Scottish elections take place on Thursday 3rd May 2007
- The last date for registering to vote, or for registering for a postal vote is Thursday 18th April 2007
- There is a new system for voting for councillors called 'Single Transferable Vote'. This means that, instead of marking an X beside the councillor you want to vote for, you should write a number - one for your first preferrance, two for your second, three for your third and so on. For more information, see our Using your Single Transferable Vote section.
- The ballot papers will be different to what is described on pages 3 and 4. There will be two ballot papers. The Scottish Parliament ballot is orange and purple. The left hand side column (orange) is where you enter your vote for the regional list MSP or party. The right hand side column (purple) is where you enter your vote for your constituency MSP. The second ballot paper is white and is for the local council elections - remember to enter numbers rather than crosses on this paper.
